Hello,

My name is Dan Ahrens, and I am the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Adviser here at Southwest Valley High School. Myself, along with the officers of the FBLA Chapter, would like to add a new idea/criteria into our annual activities. We would like to include an option for visiting 2-3 local businesses in a school calendar year. Ideally, we would like to go with 3 visits so that we cover more areas of the workforce. For our chapter, we are going to require as part of the lettering expectations that a member attend at least one business visit and then have a reward system for members who attend all 3. The original idea was to try and have 2 visits set up this Fall; so, between October and December and then the 3rd visit would happen during our FBLA week which is the week of February 12. We would also be open to having multiple businesses host at the same time if that would be an option for any of you.

As far as scheduling, the following are our original thoughts. We are open to suggestions!

  • The length of visit being 1 hour or in that ballpark.
  • If your business is only available to do the visit during school hours, then we suggest a 2:15-3:15 time slot.
  • If after hours, depending on sport activities, it might need to be a 6:15-7:15 time slot.
  • I’m not sure if a Saturday would work but it could be an option too.
  • If you feel it would be better to bring your presentation to the school, we could also host you.

What is the overall purpose of this idea?

  • To expose our students to careers and opportunities that are available locally.
  • To gain insight of what day-to-day operations might look like at your location.
  • What skills/knowledge/certification/education are needed to work in your field or departments.
  • To advertise your business!
  • Discuss job skills; being on time, present (not on phone), reliable, professional, etc…

This is our initial plan so we’re excited to see where this might take off once we get everything up and running. For this first year, we would like to open this opportunity up to any FBLA member and anyone that takes a business class with Mr. Ahrens.

Interested businesses, please respond no later than October 1st, 2023.
