Public Meeting: Rural Reconnaissance & Ground-Penetrating Radar Survey
The Adams County Historic Preservation Commission is inviting the public to an informational meeting at the Corning Community Center on Wednesday, 22 June at 7:00 pm with Archaeologist and Historian, Leah Rogers of Tallgrass Archaeology LLC in Iowa City, IA.
The Commission and Ms. Rogers will be sharing the final report of the countywide Reconnaissance Survey with a focus on historic rural churches, schools, and cemeteries (architectural and archaeological) that was recently completed. One of the recommended next steps from the report is to further investigate seven identified cemeteries and five historical burial plots.
The Commission was recently awarded a grant, Adams County Pioneer Cemeteries Ground-Penetrating Radar Survey (GPR), from the state of Iowa and the National Park Service. The primary goal of the project is to conduct a GPS of the historic cemeteries and burial plots to confirm site boundaries and locations. Additional information on this project will be shared during the evening program. One objective of the survey is to involve volunteers from the community to assist the commissioners and the consultant in the historic research and field activities to complete the work.
