Grand Times with Grankids

Fresh baked donuts from Sweet Desires or Casey’s are a treat for every grandchild! Then head to the Leathers Playscape, filled with slides, climbing features, tunnels and even a place to sit and relax. Afterwards, cool off at McMahon Drug Store with hand dipped ice cream or an old fashioned soda.  
 
Grab a sandwich from Subway or the Juke Box Café, and have a picnic at Sally’s Alley or Central Park Pavilion. The Aquatic Center can provide hours of summer fun, while rainy days may lead you indoors to find a children’s book at the Fickle Frog. Stop by Hy-Vee for some groceries and head to the Iowa Farm, about 4 miles northeast of Corning. Sit on the deck and tell your grandkids about the “good ole days”, play shuffleboard or games in the red barn. On Saturday summer nights there is NASCAR racing at the Adams County Speedway, a half mile dirt track. Twelve and under are free!
 
Head to Lake Icaria where the modern marina has boat rentals, excellent year round fishing locations, and a 300 foot swimming beach with concessions, bathhouse, and picnicking. Up for a hike or into geo-caching? Either can help you stay fit and having fun. Every kid loves pizza and trains, so be sure to stop at Breadeaux Pizza. 
 
Or plan your trip around the Lazy Days Of Summer festival the last Friday/Saturday in July.   2012 Events include  a Friday night People Choice BBQ Wings Contest & Street Dance.  Saturday kick up your heels in the morning with a 10K or 5 K run and 5K or 1 mile Walk & new PET Walk,  or munch on the pancake breakfast, watch the Parade, En Plein Air artists, street painting, free children’s games, and a Bar-B-Que! You can span the generations with a visit to Johnny Carson Birthplace and share memories of the TV legend’s clean cut comedy!
