What are you doing March 18th and 19th? How about coming out to the Corning High School and checking out our Musical - Anything Goes! There’s plenty of antics going on below deck on this ocean liner which leaves New York for London. Lights go down at 7:30 p.m. You can have hours of fun for only $6 for adults and $5 for students. Come out and support these young actors and actresses who have been spending many hours making this a great production!

Holiday Open House Weekend

Hopefully we’ll have nice weather for the Holiday Open House Weekend. Can’t wait to wander through all the shops to discover fun, new gift items for the holidays. I know some Corning Winery wine will be among several of my gift purchases for family and friends. I may have to stop by Westside Spirits and see what other festive recipes for punch or cocktails might be available. I see the Corning Opera House is having a Soup Sampler luncheon on Saturday, November 7th. Sounds like my kind of tasting. I love soup, and look forward to having some of every kind to determine my favorite! I might have to start my day with a little "Sweet" from Sweet Desires and some coffee from FSC Mart to get my engines going. I know I want to stop in at Fudge Town to look for a new style of end table to go by my recliner. Since the holidays are fast approaching I’ll be looking for some ideas from the Lone Arranger to set the stage at home. Also, McMahon’s always has some fun and flirty items to bring a smile to family members. I’ll also check out The Fickle Frog to see what theme they’ve dreamed up this year to set the stage for holiday shopping and what new items they have for sale as well as see what Corning Center for the Arts has on hand for that special someone. Also, my husband’s birthday falls in the same month as Christmas, so I’ll be checking out items also at Gadberry’s, Country Peddler, Alegent Health Home Care Products (He got a great foot massager from there last year.) Of course, if I stick to some tools for home improvement and attach a "honey-do" list to the present, we both win, right? Hope to see you on the streets November 7th.

Aquatic Center reaching new heights

The Aquatic Center seems to be progressing well. Drive by this week to see the bright blue ladder for the slide going up. What a fun sight. Also, the new bathhouse is looking great. Can’t wait for opening day. What a great new addition to the AC.Way to go City of Corning! Many thanks to all the volunteers who took the lead on this great project. With all the donations, fundraisers, grant writing, etc., it definitely took county-wide teamwork!

Adams Community Walk

The Adams Community Walk begins April 15th and runs to June 15th. This is a free two-month walking challenge for anyone in the community. The goal is to track how many steps you take in your daily fitness routine and improve upon that. We have great prizes to giveaway such as $100 gift certificates to Family Shoe Store, walking poles and much more.

Come to the Alegent Health Fitness Center on any of the below dates to get your free pedometer and log book. You can sign up as a family or an individual.

April 3rd and 10th 7:30 am to 7:00 pm or April 4th and 11th 7:30 am to 11:00 am or April 8th, 9th, 13th and 14th 5:30 am to 9:00 pm. It will take 5 minutes to register. Any questions give Gwen Larsen a call at 641.322.4471.

Corning Opera House Auction

Hope to see everyone at the Corning Activity Center on Sunday, March 29th starting at 1 p.m. for the"Re-Awakening Our Treasure" auction to benefit the renovation of the Corning Opera House. There are many cool items that will come up on the auction block. Perhaps you like wildlife artist Maynard Reece’s limited prints or collect Isabel Bloom figures. Or maybe you prefer to bid on a Johnny Orr autographed Iowa State basketball or an autographed picture of Shawn Johnson. If you collect Depression Lancaster Glass, you will find an 11" low console bowl for sale. Or you might prefer 6 Wedgewood Porcelain Christmas Collector Plates. If events are more your style, check out the beer tasting party for 10 friends, gourmet dinner for 8, 2 Tickets to "Wicked" at the Orpheum Theater in Omaha, ot a trip for 2 to Des Moines to see "Thoroughly Modern Millie". These are just a few of the nearly 200 items for sale at the auction. And what a great cause. Give Yoga a TRY!

Join Michelle Wilson, certified yoga instructor, for new sessions of yoga beginning March 19th. Classes will be held on Thursdays 5:30 - 7:00 PM and Saturdays 9:00 - 10:30 AM. If you haven’t tried yoga it is great and anyone can do it! The studio is relaxing and Michelle is one of those instructors that is just soft, gentle and peaceful. These 90 minutes will be the fastest and most relaxing of your week.

An Update

Well, sorry it’s taken us so long to update. We’ve been busy getting back into the school routine after our winter vacation, but we’re back and ready to blog. First thing on our agenda: the John J. Harris Wrestling Tournament.

This past Friday and Saturday Corning hosted the tournament, bringing in a lot of schools from around the state. Matt Haley gained a victory for Corning, but Atlantic took the overall win.

The high school is preparing for their next musical, Back to the 80s. Auditions took place two weeks ago and the Monday after that, and the cast list is posted.

Winter Homecoming was on January 9, with Derek Nicholson and Michelle Anderson taking Winter Homecoming King and Queen. Both basketball teams won their games that night. The dance followed the games on the tenth. Parents’ night for the basketball teams and the cheerleaders was on Januray 20.

On January 22, the high school basketball boys had an exciting win against Martensville/St. Mary’s, winning with an impressive score of 103 - 29. Sadly, the girls lost their game.

Corning Winery Open in time for the Holidays

Happy Holidays! I don’t know if you’ve discovered the latest and greatest from Adams County or not, but I’ll be spending some of my holiday moments with my feet up, sipping on some delicious and delightful wine from the Corning Winery. I’m not sure I’m up on all the latest vintages on the market, but I’ve sampled some at Something Special, the Corning Mini Mart, the Electric Burrito and picked up a bottle, or two, or three, a dozen or more (all as gifts, of course ) at the various outlets, including the Corning Hy-Vee Food Store. The wine is fantastic and the labeling is elegant and inviting. Not only does it invite you to "Come relax with us as you enjoy our classic wines.", but it also invites you to experience the unique flavors of the historic, traditional, and exciting venues that make up Adams County. So "cheers" to a new year, to the Corning Winery and to you and yours as we say goodbye to 2008 and look forward to a challenging yet rewarding 2009.
