Sample Corning is Simply Delicious

Holiday Open House Weekend

Hopefully we’ll have nice weather for the Holiday Open House Weekend. Can’t wait to wander through all the shops to discover fun, new gift items for the holidays.  I know some Corning Winery wine will be among several of my gift purchases for family and friends. I may have to stop by Westside Spirits and see what other festive recipes for punch or cocktails might be available. I see the Corning Opera House is having a Soup Sampler luncheon on Saturday, November 7th.  Sounds like my kind of tasting.  I love soup, and look forward to having some of every kind to determine my favorite!  I might have to start my day with a little "Sweet" from Sweet Desires and some coffee from FSC Mart to get my engines going.  I know I want to stop in at Fudge Town to look for a new style of end table to go by my recliner. Since the holidays are fast approaching I’ll be looking for some ideas from the Lone Arranger to set the stage at home.  Also, McMahon’s always has some fun and flirty items to bring a smile to family members.  I’ll also check out The Fickle Frog to see what theme they’ve dreamed up this year to set the stage for holiday shopping and what new items they have for sale as well as see what Corning Center for the Arts has on hand for that special someone.  Also, my husband’s birthday falls in the same month as Christmas, so I’ll be checking out items also at Gadberry’s, Country Peddler, Alegent Health Home Care Products (He got a great foot massager from there last year.) Of course, if I stick to some tools for home improvement and attach a "honey-do" list to the present, we both win, right?  Hope to see you on the streets November 7th.

Aquatic Center reaching new heights

aquatic center slide and bathhouse

The Aquatic Center seems to be progressing well.  Drive by this week to see the bright blue ladder for the slide going up.  What a fun sight.  Also, the new bathhouse is looking great.  Can’t wait for opening day. What a great new addition to the AC.Way to go City of Corning!  Many thanks to all the volunteers who took the lead on this great project.  With all the donations, fundraisers, grant writing, etc., it definitely took county-wide teamwork!

Corning Winery Open in time for the Holidays

Corning Winery Lake Icaria MistHappy Holidays!  I don’t know if you’ve discovered the latest and greatest from Adams County or not, but I’ll be spending some of my holiday moments with my feet up, sipping on some delicious and delightful wine from the Corning Winery.  I’m not sure I’m up on all the latest vintages on the market, but I’ve sampled some at Something Special, the Corning Mini Mart, the Electric Burrito and picked up a bottle, or two, or three, a dozen or more (all as gifts, of course ) at the various outlets, including the Corning Hy-Vee Food Store.  Corning Winery Sis's BlushThe wine is fantastic and the labeling is elegant and inviting.  Not only does it invite you to "Come relax with us as you enjoy our classic wines.", but it also invites you to experience the unique flavors of the historic, traditional, and exciting venues that make up Adams County.  So "cheers" to a new year, to the Corning Winery and to you and yours as we say goodbye to 2008 and look forward to a challenging yet rewarding 2009.

Holiday Home Tours

Alegent Health’s Rose Ann Auxillary did a great job setting up the Holiday tours this year.  We were able to participate by decorating the ACEDC spec home that is for sale out at Spring Lake Sub-division.  For an empty house it decorated up nicely.  Living RoomWith the wonderful help of Gary & Judy Thompson and Nancy Turner we got the house shipshape.  Then Jean Peckham, Jane Rychnovsky, Stacie Hull and yours truly went to work bringing decorations from hither and yon to adorn the large space.  We felt pleased with the results and had many compliments during the tours.  We also added a little holiday humor by handing out Christmas jokes and riddles . . . "How many reindeer does it take to change a lightbulb? . . . . . 8 - one to change the light bulb and seven to hold Rudolph down."  (LOL)  The first person to call and tell me this joke on the phone before Christmas get’s a free latte or hot chocolate at The Fickle Frog in Corning.  Anyway, back to the decorating.  The staff at Alegent Health also got into the holiday spirit by decorating what we fondly call the Grow Iowa House - another spec home at the subdivision.  They really went to town.  KitchenThe whole place was delightful.  You can check out more of the photos from the day by visitng Holiday Home Tours.  Hope your holidays are filled with lots of happy surprises, warm greetings, and friends and family gathered around you.

Junior High Concert

Last night (Thursday), December 4, the Junior High Band and Chorus performed their Christmas concert.  The band began at 7:30, playing “The Runaway Sleigh,” “The Christmas Song,” and “The Dance of the Slippery Slide Trombone.”  The Chorus then preformed the songs “A Glad Noel,” “The Candle in the Window,” and “A Festive Fa La La.”  All of this happened during the varsity girls’ basketball game, followed by the varsity boys’ game.  Both games were against Griswold; both Corning teams unfortunately lost, but they played hard!  The Junior High’s next girls’ game will be next Monday against Villisca at home starting at 4 P.M.

Writers in the Middle

Last Tuesday, November 18, sixth through eighth grade students who wished to go traveled to Graceland Unviersity in Lamoni for the annual Writers in the Middle conference.  This meeting is designed to help young writers better improve their skills with a variety of workshops, including a session with a guest author or illustrator; the only requirement is a story or poem composed by the student.  This year’s guest author was Avi, who has written over seventy books for young people and has recieved a Newberry Medal.  In his presentations, the audience was allowed to ask him any questions they had.  We were able to purchase some of his books, including Crispin: The Cross of Lead, Poppy, The Book without WordsThe True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, and others, and most of us chose to get our books signed by him.

All students were required to attend an Author’s Chair session at one of three class “blocks,” where they would share their stories with ten or more attendees from towns and cities across the state.  Other workshops were Stormy Writing, Hieroglyphics in 2008, Concrete Poetry, Dramatic Plays, Craftng Characters, Sing Fantastic Fantasies, R.A.F.T., Radio Broadcasting, Guest Author/Illustrator, and a Harry Potter session.  After the third and final session, everyone gathered together once more for the Keynote Presentation with Avi, where he answered more questions and read passages from two of his books, The End of the Beginning and Iron Thunder.  All students who attended enjoyed the experience and hope to go again.
