On Saturday, January 8th, 2011, the place to be at 6pm will be the Corning Community Center. The Adams Community Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual meeting there that night and they have chosen a Carnival theme for this year. You might be thinking that the Community Center is too small to hold a ferris wheel…and you’d be right!
While the event may not have any of the rides associated with carnivals, you can be sure that there is still fun to be had! Wander around to the different vendor booths, trying everything from pork chops on a stick to corn on the cob to cotton candy. While you are there, you will be able to try your luck at some games of chance. Ever wondered if carnival games were really fixed? Well, now you can try your luck for free and see if they are or not. Get so good that you can clean up at other carnivals around the state. There aren’t any teddy bears to win at this event, but you could have a house full after warming up your pitching arm at our event!
After the meal and entertainment, everyone should head to the Big Top portion of the Community Center. Here you will see the annual banquet transform into the annual meeting right before your eyes! While that might not sound like much of a magic trick, there is more in store than just that. As Chamber members, you will get to recognize the 2010 Board and vote on the slate for 2011. If you think others should be included, make a motion that another person or people be voted onto the Board. This is one of your many chances to be involved in the process, so don’t take it lightly!
Other business to be discussed will be the voting on by-law revisions. You should have seen these already in your annual dues mailing or via email. If you have somehow managed to miss them, handouts will be available to peruse before the vote. Once things have been reviewed, you can help decide to accept the changes or not. If accepted, they go into effect right before your eyes too!
Finally, we will end the night recognizing winners of the Chamber annual awards. Chamber members get the option to nominate people or businesses in five different categories. The categories are as follows: Entrepreneur of the Year, Business/Organization of the Year, Agriculturalist of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and the Joe Cook Lifetime Support Award.
This will be the first big event of the new year and we hope all of you are there to share it with us. If you want to make sure and reserve your seat, you can contact any current Chamber Board member to get a ticket. Tickets are $15 a piece and you will get your ticket when the money is paid. If you can’t find a Chamber Board member, you can always stop by the Chamber office in the Lauvstad Center or call 641-322-3243 to make sure you get your name on the list. It’s the best way to beat the winter blues with a bit of summer fun, so make sure you are there on Saturday, January 8th at 6pm. It’s destined to be the greatest show on Earth!

The process requires too much work and too much heartache for the artist. A bromoil can require days to complete, only to be ruined in the very last phase”. It is Lynda’s work with bromoil that brought her international attention. Her bromoils have been exhibited in Germany, Belgium and New York. One of Lynda’s bromoils is now part of the permanent collection in the Nebraska Governor’s Residence. Second Saturdays are sponsored each month at the Corning Center for the Fine Arts with a new artist featured each month.
